Homeless: Can you build a life from $25? | csmonitor.com

Can you use nothing but determination and work-ethic to get yourself out of poverty? Appartently so. One writer did. He started in a homeless shelter with $25 and within 10 months was "making it". Hmm.

I love the story. It goes to point out that there are many opportunities to make a life for yourself in the USA despite your circumstances. Even if things are tough, many people can make something positive from their lives with initiative and drive. It must be pointed out though that this hard-working fellow was a college graduate (educated), had supportive parents, and had a plan or ideas to implement. He used the system, as I think it ought to be used, temporarily, to get himself out of poverty and financial trouble. He learned to live simply; without the luxouries we can't live without! But what he is forgetting, or not mentioning, is that the huge difference between him and the normal homeless (like Barbara Ehrenreich)is hopelessness, desperation and attitude of dependence upon society and governmnet programs. Unfortunately, these pervasive attitudes are terribly difficult for the poor to shed. Institutionalized poverty. His upbringing, sub-culture, and education had a huge impact upon his attitude. As Andre Agassi has said, no actually he said it slightly different, so I'm saying, "Attitude is Everything!" His saying was much more shallow....

Keep up the writing Justin. You never know, maybe you'll make it big like Shepard......furnished apartment, a car, and $2,500 in savings within a year.

That would be nice!
